Drop everything you thought you knew and begin your research with a clear and welcoming frame of mind.
If you don’t know much about teardrop trailers, let’s start off with a short history lesson.
Teardrops were created in the 1930’s and were designed as a “honeymoon” camper for newlyweds or a luxury camping vacation for small families after the war. Standard features include a retro “teardrop” style look to the body, side doors for convenient access and a hatch in the rear of the camper to expose a small kitchen to store food and cook your meals.
Popularity of these mini traveling homes waned in the 1960’s, however like any good thing they always come back around and resurfaced in the late nineties as an in-demand product. The retro look is kept in most designs, however with the comeback came new ideas for luxury.
Now that you know where the fame comes from, let’s take a look at many of the biases and myths surrounding these historical trailers.
I have to buy an SUV or truck to pull a camper
False! While this may be true for some larger and heavier teardrops on the current market, one of the draws of a teardrop camper is the ability to use your current vehicle. That’s right! In fact, teardrops are traditionally designed to be less in weight for this reason. Your sedan, affixed with a tow package, will be able to pull your retro trailer down various paths and explorations all by itself.
I can’t take my family, because the cabin is too small
False! This is one of our favorites, because the cabin is usually large enough for two adults and a small child/ or pet. Also, there are teardrops built with a specific design to accommodate a regular teardrop bed and a bunk set for the kids. Not only do certain plans outline for this change, but there are additional accessories like a roof tent that will allow for extra sleeping space for your family.
I want to take my ATVs and outdoor gear, but there isn’t enough space
False! Not only do manufacturers provide options like bike racks and extra storage needs, but designers are starting to accommodate things like ATVs and other gear. There are teardrop platforms to be purchased, where you can tow your teardrop and toys on the same trailer. No need to leave the fun behind! Explore your campsite in a brand-new way!
The cabin space is enclosed and would be like sleeping in a box
False! While the cabin is sealed to prevent leaks, there are features like stargazer windows and front windows that can be added to the design to create an open concept. With the rise in demand, came craftsmanship that allowed for additions never before seen in a teardrop. Your design can fit your lifestyle. If you like space and windows, then it can be done!
I will only be able to tow the teardrop in nice weather, and not in inclement conditions
False! For most, it may be preferable to camp and hike in the sunshine; utilizing the teardrop in other conditions is just as doable. In fact, mountain camping is a fan favorite and we know teardrop enthusiasts that take their rugged teardrops to the ski slopes. Features like heating units will help keep the cold at bay in the night.
There is no way I could go camping in a teardrop, because there are no toilet facilities
False! Certain models and teardrop units come equipped with a toilet option. Whether you want a cassette toilet inside your camper or an outdoor bathroom set up, these are additional accessories that you can equip your camping experience with.
There is so little room for my extra gear
False! Teardrops can be equipped with practically everything you need for an ultimate camping experience. You want to take along your kayaks and paddle board? Done! Let’s get you a roof rack. Do you need a place for your hiking gear and extra clothes? They can fix that with storage under the bed and outside locking compartments. You need to take your bikes and your kids? Great! Install those side bike racks and you are in business. First world solutions for first world problems.
As you can see, there are ways to fix your concerns. So if you have let any of these be the reason to stop you, you can feel free to schedule an appointment with your favorite teardrop designer! If you have come across any other reasons why you haven’t bought a teardrop camper yet, please send them our way! We would love to include a follow up on additional myths and debunk them!
